Vegetable Garden: Organic Farming Initiative from Kolping Sumba

These youths have received full support from Kolping Katiku Loku, which helped provide seeds and farming tools. In addition, they were given organic farming training by the Central Sumba Department of Agriculture. “This is an extraordinary opportunity for these young people to learn and grow. The training has prepared them to manage the garden independently,” said Sisilia Pawolung, one of the field mentors for the project.

At harvest time, the project gained special attention from various parties. The Head of the Central Sumba Department of Agriculture attended the event along with several NGOs, highlighting the importance of cross-sector collaboration in supporting community-based agricultural activities like this. “We are proud of what they have achieved. They have not only learned about farming but also about responsibility and teamwork,” said Yosep Suri, another field mentor who supported the youths throughout the project.

The garden’s produce has had a significant impact on their lives. Besides gaining valuable farming experience, the young people have also earned enough income to help support their families. “Seeing these young people become more enthusiastic and responsible in managing the garden makes us very proud,” added Sisilia.

The Waisumar Vegetable Garden has now become an inspiration for other communities, demonstrating that with the right support and a spirit of cooperation, young people can be agents of change who bring benefits to their surroundings.
