Kupang, November 17, 2024 — The recent eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in Larantuka, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), has left a devastating toll on the region, with many lives lost and over 13,000 people displaced. As the region grapples with the aftermath of this natural disaster, compassionate action has emerged from various local communities, including the Kolping Family in Kupang.
During the Reflective Workshop Kolping Kupang, held at Puskopdit Kupang on November 16-17, 2024, Kolping Families from three areas of Kupang—Tenau, Osmok, and Lasbaun—came together to raise funds for the victims of the eruption. The event saw a collective donation of IDR 3.7 million, a testament to the strong spirit of solidarity among local Catholics in times of crisis.
Frans Lemba, President of Kolping Kupang, expressed his gratitude for the support, stating, “We are deeply moved by the generosity of our Kolping families here in Kupang. This contribution is a small but meaningful way for us to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Larantuka, who are suffering from this tragic event. We hope that this donation will bring some relief and show them that they are not alone in this crisis.”
Frans personally handed over the funds to Etty Seda, the Regional Coordinator of Kolping Kupang, who will coordinate the distribution of the donations through established aid networks in Kupang City. “Our hearts are with the victims of this disaster,” said Etty Seda. “We are committed to ensuring that these funds reach those who need them the most, especially the thousands who have lost their homes and livelihoods. Together, we will help rebuild what has been destroyed and provide a beacon of hope to those in despair.”
The eruption has caused widespread damage, destroying homes, churches, schools, and other infrastructure, with particular devastation to the minor seminary in Hokeng. This seminary, which has long been a source of formation for Catholic clergy in the region, is especially significant, having nurtured thousands of priests and bishops who have served both locally and internationally.
In light of this tragedy, Kolping Kupang’s initiative highlights the power of community action and the compassion of the Catholic faithful in the region. The donation will go a long way in providing essential relief to those who have lost everything in the eruption, helping to restore hope and rebuild lives.
As recovery efforts continue, the Catholic community of Kupang remains committed to supporting their brothers and sisters in Larantuka, ensuring that no one faces this tragedy alone. “We will stand with Larantuka as long as it takes,” said Etty Seda. “This is the time to show the true spirit of solidarity and compassion.”
