Kolping Lasbaun and the “Momento Mori” that Revives Solidarity

Lasbaun, Kupang — In the quiet, close-knit community of Kolping Lasbaun, a humble yet deeply meaningful initiative is flourishing: Momento Mori. This Latin phrase—”Remember that you must die”—is not seen by Kolping Lasbaun members as something somber. Instead, it becomes a powerful reminder of compassion: that in our shared mortality, we are called to care for and support one another.

With a monthly contribution of just IDR 5,000, each Kolping member can enroll themselves and their immediate family into the Momento Mori Fund. So far, 81 people have joined the program.

What makes it even more special is the care behind it. Every donation is meticulously handwritten in a ledger by Mrs. Yohana, the devoted Momento Mori coordinator. Line by line, she records each contribution—turning a simple book into a living testament of timeless compassion.

But this initiative is not just about money. It’s about presence, comfort, and the strength of community. To date, three participants have received a consolation grant of IDR 1,000,000 each, delivered personally by Kolping members during condolence visits.

One recipient shared through teary eyes:

“Beyond the financial help, the presence of the Kolping Family during our time of sorrow brought deep comfort. We truly felt that we are not alone—that we are still embraced by this greater Kolping Family.”

Momento Mori is not merely a reflection on death. It’s a vivid expression of family, lived out in the most tangible and heartfelt way.

This initiative is proof that even in simplicity, Kolping can bring meaning, warmth, and hope. Momento Mori reminds us that life is short—but love and solidarity can last a lifetime and beyond.

Kolping Lasbaun shows us that with small contributions and big hearts, we can weave a network of enduring care—an invisible thread of love that time cannot erase.
